Halbstrauch aus der Familie der Lippenblütler (Lamiaceae).
Der Name Rosmarin kommt vom lateinischen ros marinus und bedeutet "Tau (ros) des Meeres (marinus)", also "Meertau".
Der immergrüne, buschig verzweigte Strauch duftet intensiv aromatisch und erreicht eine Größe von 50 cm bis 2 Meter.
Der Rosmarin wird häufig als Zier- und Gewürzpflanze kultiviert. Rosmarin hat einen sehr intensiven, aromatischen Geruch
und einen harzigen, leicht bitteren Geschmack, der etwas an Kampfer und Eukalyptus erinnert. Er wurde aufgrund seines
ähnlichen Geruches auch als Ersatz für Weihrauch verwandt. Rosmarin war Bestandteil eines der ersten destillierten
Parfüme, bei dem aetherisches Öl mit Alkohol kombiniert wird. Die Mischung wurde 1370 registriert und hieß nach der
Koenigin Elisabeth von Ungarn (1305-1380) "Ungarisches Wasser". Kölnisch Wasser enthält nach wie vor Rosmarinöl.
